Ways to Become a Member

There are two ways to become a member of CLR: (1) Write-On Competition; or (2) “Publish-On” competition.

(1) Write On Competition

This competition is held annually after the completion of the spring semester for rising second-year students and in the beginning of the fall semester for transfer students.  During the 12-day competition, applicants complete a casenote, editing packet, and a personal statement.  Membership decisions are made solely on these components.  Grades and past experience are not considered.  Successful continuing student applicants will be notified over the summer and start membership duties in the fall semester.  Successful transfer student applicants will be notified in late September/early October and start membership duties immediately.

(2) Publish On

CLR welcomes submission of student pieces from Berkeley Law students pursuing J.D. and concurrent degree programs.  If a submission is accepted for publication before September 1 of the student’s 3L year, an offer of membership may accompany the publication offer.

Please see the Submissions Page for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I learn more about the Write On Competition for rising second-year Berkeley Law students?

Details about the 2012 Write On Competition can be found here.

How can transfer students become members of CLR?

CLR holds an annual transfer Write-On Competition for those who transferred after their 1L year. This year, the transfer write-on will begin on July 13 and end on July 24, 2012.  Please note that there is no requirement to have been accepted to, or to have committed to attending, Berkeley Law prior to participation.

Does CLR consider or transfer membership from another law review?

CLR does not consider membership on another law review to select our membership, and does not transfer membership from another law review to CLR. Each transfer must participate in the write-on competition and membership decisions will be made based on the competition materials only.

I am a LL.M., JSP, or JSD student.  May I become a member?

At this time, LL.M., JSP, and JSD students may not become members of CLR. If you are also completing another degree listed above, you may participate.
